Project Update: New Homes, South Petherton, Somerset
Works are continuing at pace for Fisher & Dean Construction Ltd at South Petherton in Somerset, where 30 New Build Affordable Homes to passivhaus standards are being constructed for Stonewater.
We will be off site shortly after the Christmas break so that other trades can continue with the superstructures, we will then return to undertake the external works to the rest of the project.

New Project: City Gateway, Cumberland Basin, Bristol
We are pleased to have commenced works as Principal Contractor on this prestigious project for Vistry Partnerships / Countryside Partnerships located on the old Ashton Rail Yard adjacent to the Cumberland Basin and metrobus route. The scheme will eventually link to the Bristol Western Harbour Development.
The project has started really well with excellent feedback from our client and the clerk of works.

Location: Cumberland Basin, Bristol
Project Completion: 2025
Scope: Groundworks, RC Frame, Drainage, Highways and External Landscaping for the construction of 220 apartments across 9 different blocks.

BCL Fleet Update
We have recently been adding to the BCL Fleet of Excavators with the arrival of the following new Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK) excavators:

13 ton ZX-135US-7 with Leica Geosystem (part of Hexagon GPS) and Engcon UK Tilt Rotator

8 ton ZX-85USB-6

6 ton ZX-65USB-6
This is part of a continued investment into renewing and adding to our plant and machinery to keep up with the latest technologies and fuel advancements.
Thank you to Ian Richards from Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK) for assisting us with these purchases following the delivery of our 21 ton ZX-225USLC-7 last year.

New Project: Kier, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton - Surgical Centre
We are pleased to have secured a new project for repeat client Kier Group following on from the recent successful delivery of Torbay Hospital.
Works at Musgrove Park Hospital have commenced in the last few weeks and we are pleased to have made a good start recognised by winning the monthly safety award which was presented to the team yesterday.
We also look forward to continuing the collaborative approach shown by the project team. The project will provide much needed facilities in Somerset including eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms along with a patient recovery and clinical support area as well as a critical care unit with 22 beds, specifically catering for level 2 and 3 critical care patients.

BCL secure new contract with GMI
We are pleased to secure a new £3m contract with Main Contractor GMI to work on the construction of a new helicopter manufacturing facility in Yeovil at the Leonardo site.
Works have recently commenced and we look forward to working with new client GMI on this prestigious scheme.

Congratulations Shaun Seviour
Yesterday Shaun completed the Brighton Marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We are all pleasantly surprised at his time and are asking for stopwatches to be checked! If anyone would like to make a donation you can do so here:

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside
BCL have recently been asked by longstanding client Midas to undertake works on their new project constructing an £11m 120 bedroom Premier Inn hotel in Torquay.
This is great news for all involved and it is great to see the hospitality and leisure sector moving forward.
Works have been getting underway on-site and further information will follow as we come out of the ground!

Success in Westonzoyland
Well done to all involved with the project at Westonzoyland for EQUANS. This
local project provided further repeat work and is one of our current four live sites across Bristol and Somerset working in partnership with the EQUANS team. Being recognised for the work being undertaken and effort put in is important and one things for sure the team will be looking forward to the breakfast!!

BCL achieve “Golden Brick” for new client Lovell Homes at Cherry Pie Meadow
BCL have recently commenced works in Sparkford, Somerset for new client Lovell.
Lovell set BCL the challenge of meeting a Christmas deadline for the installation of foundations to 12no new homes which was duly achieved. This has pleased our client Lovell as well as the end user.
We look forward to working with Lovell to create a new community, featuring 36 homes.

International Women’s Day 2021
Today we celebrate the amazing women who work in our business here at BCL Groundworks. One example is Mia Ballard who works for us as a Groundworker. Mia has most recently been working on one of our projects for Bouygues (UK) at Sidmouth College and continues to impress since joining us in 2019!

Sidmouth College – Completion of Phase 1 for Bouygues (UK)
Working for our client Bouygues (UK) in the construction of a new £10m college in Sidmouth, Devon. Practical Completion of Phase 1 was achieved on time before Christmas.
The finished article looks fantastic and we look forward to returning to undertake the Phase 2 works in Spring 2021 as the existing school is demolished.
We are pleased to be able to continue our relationship with Bouygues as we have started works on a further school project with them and the same delivery team. This time in Somerset, constructing a new Secondary School in Wiveliscombe at Kingsmead Academy.

BCL's Myles Woodward wins Checkatrade Competition
To celebrate the talent and hard work of tradesmen up and down the country, Checkatrade launched their ‘Skills On Site’ competition in March 2018.
It was a chance for individuals to showcase their talents to win ‘money-can’t-buy’ exposure for their business at the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium, live on Sky Sports.
To win, Myles uploaded a video of his ‘Skills On Site’, that included some football freestyling, that video was shared with Checkatrade on Facebook. The judging panel at Checkatrade then chose their favourite video.
Myles enjoyed the action from Wembley’s hospitality and advertised BCL Groundworks at one of football’s most iconic stadiums, as well as live on Sky Sports. From pitch-side perimeter boards, to Wembley’s big screen and a feature in the match programme!

Halsall Contractors, New Primary School, Fugglestone Red, Salisbury
BCL has started works in the last couple of weeks on a new primary school located within a Persimmon Homes site at Fugglestone Red near Salisbury.
The project is for Halsall Contractors Ltd and we have just commenced a large cut and fill operation that also includes screening of topsoil and removal of trees and vegetation.
Foundations and drainage will follow in the next few weeks, keep checking our current projects to see updated photos.

MIDAS, The Print Hall, Bristol.
BCL will be returning to site in June to commence the external works.
The externals package has been awarded in addition to the substructures and drainage already completed.
Within the external works is a substantial amount of granite paving requiring a high specification finish.

Andrew Wilson Partnership / St Monica Trust, The Chocolate Quarter, Keynsham, Bristol.
This prestigious development incorporates extensive modifications to 3 existing blocks and the construction of new buildings, alongside vast remodelling of external areas, to form luxury care facilities and retirement apartments.
The scaffold has now been dropped enabling BCL to work on all elevations of the 3 blocks. We have increased site personnel allowing several gangs to work independently around the site. This will ensure all the internal drainage to the 3 blocks will be connected to the newly installed external drainage system, prior to external works commencing later this year.
BCL are assisting with the design as the build progresses, working closely with Andrew Wilson Partnership, to ensure target dates are met and the project remains within budget. We commenced on site January 2016 and have maintained a site presence throughout the last 17 months installing all substructure works (including insitu RC retaining walls, foundations, beam and block flooring), drainage and services.

Another successful handover
This month see the successful handover of Modular Homes for our long-term partners and friends at Fisher & Dean Construction Ltd. Our long-standing relationship sees us currently on-site on 2 other modular schemes and 1 traditional scheme for Fisher & Dean Construction with a pipeline of work continuing in 2023.

Project Completion: Kier Construction, Torbay Hospital, Acute Medical Unit
Our first project with Kier Construction (Devon and Cornwall) recently completed, providing a new Acute Medical Unit at Torbay Hospital. This was a challenging project on a tight footprint whilst working within a live hospital environment. To achieve a successful outcome the teams have collaborated throughout planning
daily the sequence of works and more importantly the logistics on this scheme.

BCL giving back
As part of giving back to the community, staff from BCL visited the Bridgwater Foodbank this week to drop off advent calendars donated by the teams across all of our projects. This follows on from the work we have undertaken with the Foodbank at Easter. If any of our friends, partners, suppliers or connections would like to support the foodbank during December, we will be making a further visit before the Christmas break if you’d like to drop any donations into the office.
