National Apprenticeship Week
At BCL we’re proud to invest in the next generation of construction professionals.
We currently employ apprentices across groundworks, engineering and quantity surveying, this gives our apprentices real on-site experience, structured training and the opportunity to build long term careers within the business.
Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing skills, strengthening our industry and shaping the future of construction and we’re committed to supporting that journey every step of the way.
Thank you goes to Weston College, Bridgwater and Taunton College and the University of the West of England who provide off the job training for our apprentices and positive engagement we see. If you’re looking to learn, earn and grow in construction, apprenticeships are a powerful place to start.
It is no surprise that a large majority of our leaders came through the apprenticeship route.

HMP Eastwood Park, Bristol
We are proud to be on site at HMP Eastwood Park, continuing our long-standing partnership with Galliford Try.
This project follows on from many projects previously undertaken with the Galliford Try team including; RNAS Yeovilton, CTCRM Royal Marine Barracks Lympstone, Kingsteignton School, Westclyst School, Merchants Academy, Gloucestershire Cricket Club, Brewery Square, Salcombe Harbour Hotel, Bristol Old Vic, the list goes on…
This time we find ourselves working within a live prison environment with our vetted team, carefully planning the logistical challenges that are faced each day. There is no ‘typical day at the office’ for the teams on site and often the need to react to an ever changing environment in a short window is required.
Our team is currently delivering the essential groundworks and infrastructure that will help modernize and expand the facilities at Eastwood Park.
A big shout out to both the BCL and Galliford Try teams for their discipline and professionalism on this project. Without working collaboratively in an environment like this it would make it extremely challenging!

Branwhite Close, Lockleaze
Following our announcement earlier this year about securing the groundworks package and our first project for Stepnell, the BCL team is making fantastic headway on site in Bristol.
It’s great to see the vision for this Bristol City Council scheme starting to take physical shape.
We are currently deep into the core groundworks phase, ensuring the infrastructure is perfectly set for the 47 energy-efficient homes and commercial spaces that will soon serve the Lockleaze community.
Substructure works are moving at pace across both the housing and apartment blocks.
Service infrastructure works including installation of essential drainage is well underway.
Reinforced concrete retaining wall works are underway to retain sections of the sloping site with in-house labour.
Sustainability works continue on the specialised ground source heat pump (GSHP) infrastructure as we help deliver this ‘fabric-first’, low-carbon development. Working on brownfield regeneration projects like Branwhite requires precision and a collaborative approach.
It’s been a pleasure working alongside the Stepnell site team to keep this project moving safely and efficiently toward the next milestone.

Building Truly Affordable Homes: Inspiring the Next Generation
BCL Groundworks was proud to take part and sponsor the Design West "Shape My City Session 2", alongside Bristol City Council and Hill Partnerships, exploring one of the biggest challenges facing our industry today:
How do we create high-quality Council Houses that are genuinely affordable?
With housing increasingly treated as a commodity, delivering homes that are safe, sustainable and affordable is more important and more complex than ever. Our Director, Sam Johnson FRICS, joined industry colleagues to support students as they stepped into real-life decision-making roles, balancing design quality, sustainability, cost, site constraints and community needs.
The students took on the challenge brilliantly. They quickly saw that building the homes our communities need requires collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of every stage from groundworks to handover.
We’re passionate about supporting programmes like ShapeMyCity, which open doors for young people and shine a light on the diverse careers within the built environment.
A huge thank you to everyone involved, including our partners at Hill Partnerships and Bristol City Council, and all the brilliant facilitators and inspirers who made the session possible.

We’re proud to share some fantastic feedback from our client Kier Construction, whilst we continue works at Musgrove Park Hospital, Site Manager Jevon Garbutt said:
"I would like to extend a huge thank you to Gavin to step in and take over a brickwork masterclass for the T level students we have been hosting this week. The skill and knowledge he shared has encouraged them all to take up a trade. The lesson was thoroughly enjoyable and Gavin continues to carry out quality in all areas of work he and the team have done. Many thanks once again for efforts from all the team".
